Manan Trivedi Becomes First in 6th CD Race to Release Comprehensive Jobs Plan:

Powering America's Schools. Energizing Job Growth.

Reading, Pa - Prior to President Obama's first State of the Union address, and as Democratic members of Congress begin to work with the White House on new legislation for a jobs creation bill, candidate Manan Trivedi is offering them a comprehensive plan, the first candidate to do so in the campaign for Pennsylvania's sixth congressional district. The proposal that Trivedi has released called Powering America's Schools. Energizing Job Growth, uses a multi-benefit approach to not only improve the jobs growth, but create educational and technical training opportunities and advancing the transition into clean energy sources.

"We must create jobs. We can't just talk about it. And in order to do that we have to put forth an actual plan and not just a set of beliefs," said Trivedi. "As Washington begins to put together a jobs bill, they must start with our schools. And if we are going to invest tax dollars to do it, we must do it in a way that is advantageous to a cross section of our community. We can be creating jobs by implementing a plan to retrofit our schools with clean energy technology and all the while use that technology to teach future generations," Trivedi continued.

In a letter sent to President Obama and all of the Democratic members of the Pennsylvania delegation, Trivedi included a copy of the plan that detailed his set of priorities for a jobs bill currently being drafted.

"This is all about changing the way we do things in Washington. Just throwing money and grand ideas at a problem doesn't fix anything and it usually ends up causing more problems in the end," said Trivedi. "We have to be smarter about how we do the people's business and spend the people's money. And when it is all said and done, we have to be accountable to the people by making sure we accomplish our goals. It is time to get Pennsylvanians back to work and that is exactly what I will do in Congress," Trivedi said.

Trivedi added that specifically in Pennsylvania, his plan would also benefit local school districts and property tax payers by helping schools save money in their energy costs, therefore providing some relief from future property tax increases.

Manan Trivedi is a primary care physician, an Iraq War veteran and a former Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy.

Economists continue to tell us the recession is letting up, but we won't see real, meaningful change for Pennsylvania's working families until we start to create more jobs. Our nation still faces a double-digit unemployment rate and more than 207,000 (i) jobs have been lost in Pennsylvania alone since the start of the recession. Those lucky enough to still have a job are often being asked to work longer hours for less pay while living in fear that they might be the next to be laid off. We can certainly do better.

As your representative in Congress from the 6th District, my number one priority will be to fight for the creation of new jobs and to protect existing jobs. We need to restore economic opportunities for new generations of Americans and ensure that the American Dream is still available to anyone willing to work hard. The common notion nowadays is that our children will be worse off than we are. But it doesn't have to be that way. We owe it to younger generations to provide them economic opportunity to advance as far as possible.

Previous generations have faced grave challenges to our national prosperity, and each time Americans have rallied to overcome these obstacles. American ingenuity has always been the driving force behind job creation in this country and it will be again.
But we can't just wait and hope for new jobs to spring up by themselves. We need an aggressive plan that increases economic opportunity with good jobs that won't get shipped overseas. The way we get there is through education and skills development that provides workers with what they need to get good jobs and support their families.

I believe that one of the greatest challenges facing our nation - the need for energy independence - also offers the best opportunity to jump start our economy and create long lasting, good paying, quality jobs. America has reached a critical juncture where energy policy decisions must be made to create greener and cleaner sources of power. And with this shift, comes enormous opportunities for economic expansion and job creation for years to come.

Here are some of the principles that I will focus on to create more quality jobs in the 6th District:

Invest in education and job training: To compete locally, nationally and internationally, our workers must have superior skills and education. I will support investments in our workforce that are smart, focused, and will lead to long-term results

Support businesses that create jobs: We need to foster American ingenuity by supporting small businesses with good ideas to continue to drive job-creation in this country. I will support tax incentives that encourage expansion and new hiring.

Build and maintain our infrastructure: Not only do we need to invest in roads, bridges, and railways to ensure the efficient movement of goods, but we also need to invest in technological infrastructure. Ensuring that all businesses and homes have access to broadband technology will help us compete better in the global marketplace.

We don't have to wait to put these ideas to work. We can use these principles to help guide smart investments that will create new jobs right now while also investing in our future workforce.

By making smart investments in the schools in the 6th District we can get started right away. Specifically, we should launch an effort to retrofit local schools to become more energy efficient by switching to clean energy sources (such as wind energy, solar power, biomass heaters). This plan will help us can create new jobs now, help cut costs for cash-strapped schools and invest in students to prepare them for the 21st century economy.

Here's how the plan would work:

Use the retrofitting process to help train vocational and apprenticeship students: Many Pennsylvania school districts have a vocational partner school and many construction trades operate local apprenticeship programs. By setting up and instituting working relationship between the contractors and these students during the retrofit process, we can ensure that today's youth will develop the skills needed to compete in the 21st century economy.

Engage science classes in the study of new retro-fitting technology: Teachers and schools will benefit from having new clean-energy equipment available for instructional purposes. This too could provide an incentive for students to one day go into the field of creating the next wave of green technology and therefore create more jobs.

Tap savings to strengthen school budgets: Energy-efficient retrofitting will provide savings to schools, which could have an immediate impact on their budgets and could be used for future improvements.

This plan is a commonsense start to building energy independence locally while also creating immediate jobs and helping to train future generations of workers. Congress will likely be working on a job creation bill in the coming months. Any legislation that is considered should include the components of this plan.

With limited resources, we need to focus on smart investments that not only provide help right now to struggling families, but also prepare Pennsylvania and our nation for long-term economic security. Our current economic challenges offer genuine opportunities to make investments that not only add jobs today, but also help build a dynamic, adaptive and flexible workforce for tomorrow.
